The Garden Route is green and high-rainfall, with mild summers and weather coming in off the Indian Ocean, so a cover here has to handle rain and damp as well as sun.
All four jobs we have documented here are composite pergolas: one over an outdoor living area in Mossel Bay, one along a white facade in Knysna and two in Sedgefield. In Knysna and Mossel Bay the owners wanted the look of timber without the sanding and sealing that real timber needs on this coast. We fabricate in Cape Town, and our own team installs on scheduled trips along the N2.

The Garden Route is green for a reason: unlike Cape Town’s winter-rain pattern, rain falls here in every season, often hard and off the sea. Where an outdoor room must stay fully dry, a patio ceiling does it with enclosed aluminium panels and an integrated box gutter. A louvre roof is about 95% weatherproof when closed, and a composite pergola can be roofed in multiwall polycarbonate.
Timber struggles in this climate. Knysna’s forest coast stays damp for months and the estuary air carries salt, so wooden pergolas go grey unless someone keeps re-oiling them. The Knysna job uses honey-toned composite beams on powder-coated aluminium instead. One of the Sedgefield pergolas sits on an open rise above the town, with views over the valley. Its timber-look slats on a charcoal frame filter the sun across the day.

Why choose a composite pergola over timber on the Garden Route?
Real timber goes grey in Knysna’s damp, salt-laden air unless it is sanded and re-oiled, and on the Mossel Bay coast it needs resealing every year. Composite beams on powder-coated aluminium keep the timber look without that work. They don’t warp, rot or fade, and an occasional rinse is all they need. The composite also carries its own product guarantee.
Can a composite pergola keep the rain off?
Yes, with the right roof. The timber-look beams can carry fixed multiwall polycarbonate, which is fully weatherproof and lets filtered daylight through, or a retractable fabric roof for shade on demand. Where an outdoor room must stay completely dry through rain in every season, a patio ceiling with enclosed panels and a box gutter is the other option. We will recommend one for your site.
What is the lead time for a Garden Route install?
Fabrication happens in Cape Town on our normal schedule. The install then goes into the next scheduled trip along the N2, and we confirm the install date with your quote. Once our team is on site, a residential install typically takes one to two days.

Aluminium Awnings Cape Town enclosed our Constantia patio with a manual louvre roof, full white, with aluminium doors and windows all round, and it's honestly become our favourite part of the house.
