Our work on this side of town runs from a motorised louvre roof in Parow and a downlit patio ceiling in Edgemead to a full-width roof over a first-floor terrace on the Plattekloof ridge. Bellville and Durbanville have the most: five louvre roofs in Bellville, and in Durbanville four louvre roofs, a ceiling awning and a fixed IBR awning.
Summers here run hotter than on the coast and winter fronts bring hard rain, so a cover needs proper drainage and a frame sized for the wind the ridges catch. We design, fabricate and install in-house, in marine-grade aluminium that won't rust or need repainting, powder-coated in the colour you choose. Durbanville and Bellville sit far enough inland that summer heat matters more than salt. Adjustable louvres let you angle the blades to filter the afternoon sun and keep the air moving. The Plattekloof terrace roof sits on an exposed ridge, so it is built for that wind exposure and tied back to the house wall, and with the blades open the valley view stays clear.
We still build in marine-grade aluminium with no ferrous metal, because Northern Suburbs winters are wet. The Parow louvre roof and the dove-grey roof in Durbanville have gutters built into the frame. In Edgemead the patio ceiling has LED downlights recessed into the beams, wired to a switch on the house wall, so the space works after dark.

Do I need estate or council approval for a patio roof in Durbanville?
It depends on the structure and where you live. Its size, whether it is roofed or attached to the house, and how close it sits to a boundary all affect what the City asks for, and estates often add architectural rules of their own. Check your estate guidelines and the City's requirements before work starts. At the site visit we tell you what your project is likely to need. With the quote, we supply the drawings your estate or body corporate asks for.
What suits a patio that gets the hot afternoon sun?
An adjustable louvre roof. Angle the blades to filter the afternoon sun and keep the air moving, or close them when it rains. When the sun drops low on a west-facing patio, a drop awning with block-out fabric on that side does the rest. A patio ceiling also works: on our Durbanville ceiling awning the white panels bounce light down, so the patio stays brighter and cooler than under a dark roof.
Can you build lights into a patio cover?
Yes, and it is best planned at the design stage. On our Edgemead patio ceiling the LED downlights are recessed into the support beams, with the wiring concealed in the beam profile and run to a switch on the house wall. We install the conduit, beam channels and fitting positions. Your own qualified electrician makes the final connection and issues the Certificate of Compliance.
Should I choose a manual or motorised louvre roof?
Manual costs less and has fewer components to maintain, so it suits a sheltered patio where you are there to adjust it. In Bellville, a bronze-and-white roof over a braai patio runs on a winding rod mounted within reach of the seating. The Parow owner wanted no winding at all: one button tilts and closes the blades, and the wiring was planned into the frame from the start.

Aluminium Awnings Cape Town enclosed our Constantia patio with a manual louvre roof, full white, with aluminium doors and windows all round, and it's honestly become our favourite part of the house. We use it right through winter now. The rain and the wind don't get in, and it's so easy to wind the louvres open when the sun comes out.
