Paarl and Stellenbosch afternoons often pass 30 degrees from December to March, and valley mornings can drop close to freezing in July. That heat is why the Val de Vie client chose a manual louvre pergola: the job there is managing sun, and a winding rod sets the blade angle with no motor to maintain. Tilt the blades and the glare drops while the light stays.
Colour follows the house and the estate. The Stellenbosch roof went charcoal to match a grey estate home, and the Val de Vie louvre pergola went bronze with white blades. Do you work inside Winelands estates like Val de Vie?
Yes. We have built two projects at Val de Vie in Paarl: a freestanding manual louvre pergola in bronze and white, and a composite pergola over a timber-look composite deck. Every structure on the estate goes through its architectural guidelines. Where your estate needs drawings, we supply them with the quote, which follows within 48 hours of the free site visit.
Will the frame colour fade in the Winelands sun?
Aluminium frames are powder-coated, and the coating is specified for intense UV. Dark frames such as the charcoal roof in Stellenbosch also get hotter to the touch on a February afternoon, so for a poolside or west-facing area it is worth looking at bronze, white and lighter colours from the full powder-coat range before you decide.
Is an aluminium or composite pergola better for a Winelands home?
It depends on the house and the span. An aluminium louvre roof gives adjustable shade and closes for rain, as on the Stellenbosch pool walkway. A composite pergola reads as timber and suits decks and garden settings: at Val de Vie the slats sit on a charcoal aluminium frame. Neither needs sanding or sealing. We build both and recommend one at the free site visit.
How wide can a louvre roof or pergola span without extra posts?
A single louvre roof can span more than 6 metres. Wider areas need extra posts or a heavier frame. On one large Stellenbosch outdoor area we used a steel H-beam structure clad in timber-look composite, so the space stayed open without a row of columns. If you are covering a long stoep, we plan the post positions at the site visit so they stay out of the way.

Aluminium Awnings Cape Town enclosed our Constantia patio with a manual louvre roof, full white, with aluminium doors and windows all round, and it's honestly become our favourite part of the house. We use it right through winter now. The rain and the wind don't get in, and it's so easy to wind the louvres open when the sun comes out.
