Outdoor space in the City Bowl is usually small and in full view of the neighbours. The south-easter spills over Table Mountain and gusts through the City Bowl, and the winter fronts bring heavy rain. We build for both: frames sized to the span and fixed with anchors chosen for the wall, and louvre blades that close to drain into a gutter built into the frame.
Sightlines are the other constraint. In Gardens the houses sit close, so a cover is seen from next door as much as from below. The white ceiling awning there has concealed drainage, so no gutter hardware shows from any angle, and the all-charcoal louvre roof reads as a dark architectural line against the pale house wall.

City Bowl patios: approvals, walls and wind
Can you cover a small courtyard or patio in the City Bowl?
Yes. Every system is measured on site and fabricated in-house to the exact size of the space, so a compact patio or courtyard gets a cover that fills it without wasted structure. In Gardens we have fitted a wall-attached louvre roof over a patio off the main house, and a full white ceiling awning over a previously exposed corner of a property.
Do I need approval for a patio cover in Gardens or the Bo-Kaap?
It depends on the structure, its size and how close it sits to a boundary. Homes in the Bo-Kaap and other older City Bowl streets may also fall under heritage rules. Check with the City of Cape Town and any body corporate before work starts. With the quote we supply the drawings a body corporate needs, and at the site visit we can say what else may be needed.
Can a cover be fixed to an older Victorian or Edwardian house?
Yes, once the wall has been checked at the site visit. Victorian and Edwardian buildings often have solid masonry walls, which make good fixing points. We choose the anchor to suit the wall (chemical, sleeve or mechanical fixings) so the installation does not compromise it. A full white finish also tends to sit well against the white and off-white exteriors common on these streets.
Will a louvre roof cope with the south-easter in the City Bowl?
It has to be designed for the gusts that come down the slopes. The frame is sized to your span and fixed with anchors chosen for your wall. On the Gardens louvre roof the blades are adjusted by hand: cranked fully open on still evenings, closed when a winter front comes through, with the roof pitched so the rain runs away from the house wall.
How long does an install take on a narrow City Bowl street?
Components are fabricated in-house and arrive ready to assemble, so a single-span cover is typically installed in one to two days and larger structures take two to three. Lead time from accepted quote to sign-off is four to five weeks. Parking and carry-in access on steep, narrow streets are worth raising at the free site visit, so the install day can be planned around them.

Aluminium Awnings Cape Town enclosed our Constantia patio with a manual louvre roof, full white, with aluminium doors and windows all round, and it's honestly become our favourite part of the house.
