The basics
Timber look. Low maintenance.
A composite pergola gives you the warm, natural appearance of timber overhead, without any of the maintenance. The beams are composite-coated aluminium: an authentic wood-grain surface over a structural aluminium core. No painting, no sanding, no sealing, ever. Posts and carriers are powder-coated aluminium, so the whole structure shrugs off rust, rot and warping.
Roof it your way: fixed multiwall polycarbonate for a permanent, fully weatherproof covered room, or a retractable shearweave system for shade on demand and open sky when you want it. Freestanding or wall-attached, with lighting, fans and screens designed in.

Why composite
Warmth that lasts
01
Wood-grain look
Composite-coated aluminium beams carry an authentic timber grain overhead. You get the warmth of wood for a contemporary or classic home, without the colour fade and cracking real timber suffers in the Cape sun.
02
Low maintenance
The composite coating never needs painting, sanding or sealing. There's no annual upkeep, just an occasional rinse. It looks new for years while real timber would already need re-oiling.
03
Aluminium core
Under the composite finish, the structure is aluminium, with powder-coated posts and carriers. That means coastal corrosion resistance and the strength to span without bulky timber sections.
04
Your choice of roof
Pair the warm beams with fixed polycarbonate for a permanent weatherproof room, or retractable shearweave for shade on demand. Freestanding or wall-attached, with extras designed in.

Build quality
The look of timber, built to last.
Real timber warps, greys and cracks in coastal sun and salt air, and demands sanding and sealing every year. A composite pergola gives you the same warmth with an aluminium core and a composite coating that simply doesn't.

Questions
Composite pergola FAQs
What is a composite pergola?
A composite pergola uses composite-coated aluminium beams that give the warm, natural appearance of timber overhead, without timber's maintenance. The composite coating needs no painting, sanding or sealing, ever. Posts and carriers are powder-coated aluminium, so the whole structure resists rust, rot and warping.
What's the difference between a composite and an extruded aluminium pergola?
The extruded aluminium pergola is fully powder-coated aluminium throughout for a clean, uniform, architectural finish. The composite pergola uses composite-coated aluminium beams with an authentic wood-grain surface and natural warmth overhead, while posts and carriers remain powder-coated aluminium. Extruded aluminium pergolas start from R3 000/m² and composite pergolas from R3 500/m², and both offer the same two roofing options.
Does the composite need painting, sanding or sealing?
No. The composite coating on the aluminium beams requires low maintenance, with no painting, sanding or sealing. An occasional rinse keeps it looking new. You get the look of timber without any of the upkeep.
What roofing options are available?
Two. Multiwall polycarbonate is a fixed, architectural-grade panel that's fully weatherproof, with UV protection on both sides and filtered natural daylight below. Retractable shearweave is an open-weave technical fabric on a motorised or manual track that draws across for shade and retracts fully to reveal open sky.
How much does a composite pergola cost in Cape Town?
Composite pergolas start from around R3 500/m², supplied and installed. The roofing option and site conditions affect the final price. We provide a fixed written quote after a free site visit.
Can it be freestanding or attached to the house?
Both. Attached pergolas connect to your house wall, ideal for patios and entertainment decks. Freestanding pergolas stand independently over a pool surround, garden dining area or courtyard. We recommend the right configuration during the free site visit.
Will it handle Cape Town's coastal conditions?
Yes. The structure is aluminium under the composite coating, so it resists corrosion, salt air and moisture, and the powder-coated posts and carriers are engineered for Cape Doctor wind loads and high UV. Every installation is backed by a lifetime corrosion guarantee.
Can I add lighting, fans or screens?
Yes. LED downlights, ceiling fans, drop screens, roller blinds, side enclosures and concealed gutters can all be designed in during fabrication, with wiring routed invisibly through the aluminium frame.

We were looking for a modern, low-maintenance patio cover that suited our home in Stellenbosch, and this was exactly what we wanted. The finish is beautiful, the installation was neat, and communication throughout the project was excellent. It’s given us a space we can enjoy all year round. We would definitely use Aluminium Awnings again.
Aluminium Awnings Cape Town enclosed our Constantia patio with a manual louvre roof, full white, with aluminium doors and windows all round, and it's honestly become our favourite part of the house. We use it right through winter now. The rain and the wind don't get in, and it's so easy to wind the louvres open when the sun comes out. Neat, tidy install with a friendly team, and the white finish looks really clean against the house. Couldn't be happier, highly recommend.
Ryan and his team were awesome and really went the extra mile to make our awning perfect! Can definitely recommend them!
Very happy with the replacement of our awning after it got damaged in the May storm. More sturdy and stronger
We recently had a louvre awning installed by Aluminium Awnings at our home in Durbanville, and we’re so pleased with the result. The quality of the workmanship is excellent, and the finished product has completely transformed our outdoor space. The team was professional, arrived on time, and kept us informed throughout the installation. We looked at a few different companies before deciding, and we’re really glad we chose Aluminium Awnings. If you’re considering louvre awnings in Cape Town, we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.

Absolutely thrilled with our new louvre awning from Aluminium Awnings. From start to finish, the service was professional, the installation was neat, and the finished product looks incredible. We’re based in Blouberg, so we wanted something that would work well with the coastal conditions and strong winds, while still giving us control over the sunlight and shade. The louvre awning has completely transformed the outside area and the quality of the aluminium structure and finish is excellent. Would definitely recommend Aluminium Awnings to anyone in Blouberg or Cape Town looking for a quality louvre awning. Very happy with the end result!
