Much of the Whale Coast faces straight onto the sea, from Pringle Bay and Kleinmond through Onrus, Vermont and Hermanus to Gansbaai, with Stanford a short way inland. Salt air, onshore wind and winter rain all come with the sea view.
In Hermanus we built a bronze-framed louvre roof with white blades, chosen to match the terracotta render. In Vermont there are two louvre roofs, one of them a full-white system with the gutter built into the frame. Every frame was made in our Cape Town workshop and fitted on site by our own team.

Hermanus takes its weather off Walker Bay: salt air that works on coatings all year, winter rain, and a summer south-easter that works on anything left outside. On our louvre roofs that sets the spec: marine-grade aluminium with no ferrous metal, stainless fasteners, a powder-coated frame and baked-enamel louvres and gutters.
If the house stands empty between weekends, a motorised louvre roof with the optional rain and wind sensors closes the blades with nobody there, and its motors sit in sealed IP65 housings. We still advise closing it before a forecast south-easter. Colour is the other decision: bronze picked up the terracotta render in Hermanus, and full white let the Vermont system fade into the house.

Do you install in Hermanus, Kleinmond and Gansbaai?

Is the Whale Coast too windy for a louvre roof?
It depends on the site. Exposed spots such as Pringle Bay and Betty’s Bay take strong wind, so we assess wind loads on the free site visit and size the posts, beams and footings to suit before anything is specified. The frame is sized to your span and anchored to take the south-easter.
Can a louvre roof close itself when we are away?
Yes, if the roof is motorised and you add the optional rain and wind sensors. They close the blades when the weather turns, so nobody has to be home, and the motors sit in sealed IP65 housings. If a strong south-easter is forecast, we still advise closing the roof before you leave. At home you can also run it by remote, wall switch or app.
Does salt spray off Walker Bay void the guarantee?
Not on its own. The lifetime corrosion guarantee covers corrosion failure of qualifying marine-grade aluminium components we supply and install, under normal residential use, provided they are cleaned and maintained correctly. Coastal salt build-up, surface staining and powder-coat fade are not covered, so wash the frame and blades with clean water and a mild soap, more often this close to the sea, and keep the gutters and outlets clear.
Do I have to choose charcoal or white?
No. The frame is powder-coated in the colour you choose. In Hermanus a bronze frame with white blades picks up a terracotta-rendered house, and in Vermont the frame and blades run the same white so the system blends into white coastal architecture.

Aluminium Awnings Cape Town enclosed our Constantia patio with a manual louvre roof, full white, with aluminium doors and windows all round, and it's honestly become our favourite part of the house. We use it right through winter now. The rain and the wind don't get in, and it's so easy to wind the louvres open when the sun comes out. Neat, tidy install with a friendly team, and the white finish looks really clean against the house. Couldn't be happier, highly recommend.
