The Southern Suburbs run from the edge of the City Bowl out to Constantia's wine farms and down to Tokai Forest, under the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. Gardens are established and well treed. Away from Noordhoek's sea air, the job here is mostly about rain and shade.
Our jobs here show how that plays out. On a Claremont louvre roof, white blades on a charcoal frame stay partly open most of the summer to soften the light through the canopy. In Kenilworth, a patio ceiling with marble-white panels and a built-in box gutter keeps the paving dry all winter. Every structure is made in our workshop and fitted by our own team.

The mountain makes the Southern Suburbs wetter than most of Cape Town, and a winter front can bring weeks of soaking rain. So the drainage is built in: concealed drainage on the Claremont louvre roof, a box gutter on the Kenilworth ceiling.
The other local factor is trees. Pines and oaks drop needles, leaves and pollen onto any roof beneath them, as on our Tokai louvre roofs. Closed aluminium blades shed most of that debris and a rinse clears the rest. Under Claremont's canopy and on grey Constantia winter days, white blades and marble-white panels stop a covered patio going dim.

How does a louvre roof cope with oak and pine leaves?
Closed, the aluminium blades shed rain and debris, and on our louvre roof under the Tokai treeline a rinse now and then keeps them clean. The part to watch is drainage. Clear leaves and needles out of the integrated gutter and downpipes before the winter rain, because a blocked gutter can overflow when the blades are closed.
Is a louvre roof waterproof enough for Claremont or Newlands rain?
Closed, a louvre roof is roughly 95% weatherproof. The blades shed water into a gutter that runs along the perimeter to integrated downpipes, so the space below stays dry in all but the most extreme wind-driven rain. If the space must stay dry in every storm, a sealed patio ceiling like our Kenilworth one is the better choice.
Can a pergola or louvre roof look original to the house?
That comes down to colour and proportion. On a Constantia pergola we powder-coated the slats, frame and columns matte black to match the home's window joinery, and ran the extruded slats uniformly across the bay so the roof reads as a continuation of the flat roofline. A Constantia louvre roof went full white to match the house's existing exterior.
Can you install during a Cape winter?
Yes. Fabrication happens in our workshop whatever the weather, and a typical install takes one to two days on site. Winter is a good time to plan. The site visit is free, and with a lead time of four to five weeks, a cover planned in winter is ready before summer.
