North of Melkbosstrand, the R27 runs up a flat, open coast to Langebaan, then on to the Saldanha Bay towns and Paternoster. Little stands in the way of the summer south-easter, salt mist drifts in off the Atlantic, and there is not much natural shade. At a holiday home, the weather keeps working on the cover while nobody is there.
In Langebaan we fitted a charcoal louvre roof with LED downlights and drop blinds on its open sides. Two more louvre roofs went up in Melkbosstrand, and a fourth covers the patio of an exposed West Coast property. All four were fabricated in Cape Town and installed by our own team.

Open-coast weather
Built for the south-easter and the salt.
On this coast the wind can arrive fast and side-on, and salt settles on anything left outside. For the exposed West Coast job that meant marine-grade aluminium in every member, with no ferrous metal in the structure, so there is nothing to rust and nothing to repaint. On a calm day the blades open right up. When the weather turns they close, and the roof is about 95% weatherproof, with an integrated gutter carrying the run-off away.
In Langebaan, drop blinds come down over the open sides when the wind picks up, and concealed LED downlights keep the roof in use after dark. One of the two Melkbosstrand roofs is motorised and has a ceiling fan for still summer days, with the fan point and wiring built into the beam before powder coating. The other pairs a bronze frame with white blades that turn by hand, so nothing electrical sits out in the sea air.

How far up the West Coast do you install?
From Melkbosstrand up the R27 to Yzerfontein and Langebaan, then on to Saldanha, Jacobsbaai, Vredenburg, Paternoster and St Helena Bay. Every job is run from our Cape Town office: book a site visit on 069 069 7814, by phone or WhatsApp. Tell us your town, the rough size of the area to cover and which side the wind hits, and send a few photos if you can. Everything is fabricated in Cape Town and installed by our own team.
Is the site visit still free as far out as Paternoster?
Yes. The site visit is free in every region we cover, including every West Coast town we serve. We measure up, check the wall or slab the structure will fix to, and look at drainage and access. A fixed written quote follows within 48 hours of the visit. If your home is in an estate or a sectional-title complex, we include the drawings the estate or body corporate asks for with the quote.
Will a louvre roof stand up to the West Coast wind?
Yes. The carriers, beams and poles are engineered for south-easter wind loads, and each structure is sized to its span and anchored for the site. Closed, the blades keep out sun and rain, but wind still comes in through the open sides. Drop blinds deal with that. Shade mesh takes the bite out of the wind and keeps the view. Clear PVC blocks it, but it also catches the full force, so roll it up on a wild day.
How do I look after it in the salt air?
Rinse the frame and blades with fresh water, wash them with mild soapy water and a soft brush, then rinse again. On the coast, do this about every three months, because salt spray settles on the finish. Keep the gutter and downpipes clear, and skip the pressure washer at close range. There is no timber to oil or seal and nothing to repaint. Correct cleaning is also a condition of the corrosion guarantee.
What suits a holiday home that stands empty for weeks?
Marine-grade aluminium with no timber in it, so there is nothing to oil or seal between visits. A manual roof has no electronics to maintain. A motorised roof can be fitted with a rain sensor and a wind sensor, so it closes itself when rain starts or the wind rises. If strong wind is forecast, close it yourself before you leave. Either way, plan a fresh-water rinse around every three months.
Should the blades be manual or motorised near the sea?
We have built both in Melkbosstrand. One roof runs on a remote, and its ceiling fan is wired through the beam on its own circuit, so the fan runs at any blade angle. The other is manual, which keeps electrics out of the salt air. Motors sit in IP65 housings and are best specified up front. A large or high roof, or one used every day, suits a motor; a small, low patio does well on manual.
