Motorised vs Manual Louvre Roofs: Which Is Worth It?

Every louvre roof opens and closes. The question is whether to do it by hand or at the touch of a button. Here is how motorised and manual compare, and when the upgrade is worth it.
How each works
A manual louvre roof rotates the blades with a simple gear mechanism. A motorised roof uses a quiet electric motor and remote or wall switch, with optional smart-home control.
Convenience
Motorised wins for large roofs, high installations and daily use (one button instead of a crank). For a small, easy-reach patio, manual is perfectly practical.
Sensors
Rain and wind sensors are only possible with a motor: the roof can close itself when the weather turns, which is genuinely useful in the Cape. See covers for the Cape Doctor.
Cost
Manual is the most cost-effective; motorisation adds the motor, controls and wiring, plus any sensors. It is the single biggest line item in a louvre-roof quote.
Reliability & upkeep
Both are built to last; the motorised system has electronics in IP65 housings to maintain, while manual has fewer parts. Either way, basic cleaning keeps the guarantee valid.
Which suits which?
Big, high or frequently-used roof? Go motorised, ideally with sensors. Small, low, occasional-use patio? Manual does the job for less.
FAQ
Can I add a motor later?
It is best specified up front, as wiring and the mechanism differ. Tell us if automation may be a future plan and we will advise.
What happens in a power cut?
It depends on the system: not every motorised roof can be worked by hand. Ask at the site visit what yours does without power, and we will walk you through the controls on hand-over.
Are rain and wind sensors worth it?
In the Cape, many owners find them well worth it. The roof reacts to weather automatically, protecting the space and the structure.
