Full white aluminium ceiling awning in Gardens, Cape Town City Bowl.

The brief

Gardens is one of Cape Town's most characterful City Bowl suburbs, with Victorian and Edwardian homes, tree-lined streets and compact outdoor spaces where every square metre of covered patio matters. This full white ceiling awning makes the most of the available space while keeping the visual weight of the structure to a minimum.

The build

The ceiling awning is full white throughout: white powder-coated frame, white interlocking ceiling panels and white fascia. In a dense City Bowl setting where the awning is visible from multiple angles, keeping the installation all-white ensures it looks as considered from outside the garden as it does from below. Concealed drainage prevents any visible gutter hardware on the perimeter.

Urban patio spaces face constraints that suburban gardens do not: neighbouring property lines are closer, privacy is more limited, and the awning is often visible from multiple angles simultaneously. A full white installation reads as a clean, finished element rather than an industrial structure. The absence of visible gutters, brackets or fascia fixings reinforces that impression.

The result

A compact but well-resolved outdoor ceiling that has turned a previously exposed patio into a usable year-round outdoor room. The full white finish suits the surrounding Victorian and Edwardian architecture without competing with it. Concealed drainage keeps the perimeter fascia completely clean.

Overlooked from every side in Gardens

City Bowl properties come with an audience. In Gardens the houses sit close together, the outdoor spaces are compact, and an awning is seen from neighbouring properties as much as from underneath it. That shaped this build: white interlocking ceiling panels, white frame, white fascia, with the drainage concealed so no gutter hardware shows from any angle.

The other constraint was the street itself. Gardens is Victorian and Edwardian territory, and a heavy modern structure would fight the architecture around it. A flat white ceiling awning does the opposite: it reads as a finished part of the house, keeps the compact patio bright, and turns a previously exposed corner of the property into a room that works year round.
